Also, if you put your email on a website, such as your personal site, etc. put it in a form that will confuse spam list generators but not humans, like (say your email address is [email protected]):
[email protected]
or
averagejoe[at]someisp.com
A more elegant scheme that has been used is to use an image for the @ symbol
This is also worth considering if you are a bulletin board administrator - if your profiles have email addresses viewable, display them in a spam-proof form.
If you're really geniunely offended by a particular spammer (either by the content or volume) there are usually measures you can take to get the spammer kicked off their ISP (which can result in them being blacklisted by a whole group of ISPs, generally ones which use the same upstream provider).
