Hey all you fellow bird lovers out there in pixie land hehe!

Okay, so for my birthday I've been given the means to take on another member of my pet-family. I used to have a fancy parakeet named Breezy, she was my everything...and before my b/f and while I was having very hard times, I do not exaggerate (aw, I really do miss her still, it'll be around 3 yrs since she's passed soon).
I feel I may be ready to move on...i've thought about finches, canaries, lovebirds, conures, cockatiels, parakeets...lol and what I keep coming back to is thinking about buying a pair of lovebirds. This would be good so they could be happy and keep each other company when I'm not around-nothing would break my heart more than to think of the poor baby by itself without a friend....I also have always just loved members of the parrot family-to me, it looks like they're always smiling
My question is, for you bird owners, what kind of bird do you most like to own, and why?

I have love birds...at one point 5, including a breeding pair and their kiddos. I hand raised one of the 5 from the minute it hatched from the egg. He is Sassafrass, my love. I gave away the mom and dad birds because I read that letting the birds inbreed caused abnormalities down the line. Currently I have 2 males, Sigfried & Roy, who an wild and live together. Then I have Sassafrass, who I am his mate If you want a lovebird to love you, you can not give them a bird mate. Sassafrass has some masturbatory issues but overall seems to be a happy bird. He is comforted I believe by knowing the other birds are near even if they do not live in the same cage. If you have any questions feel free to PM. Main down side~ they are noisy as hell.

Used to work with birds, mostly finches, but as a bit of an ex-songbird specialist I offer you my pm box for what little I remember.

Basically, though...if you're looking for a friendly bird, stick with budgederia. Songbirds just don't get as attached to people. Most people who are looking for songbirds are looking for the song, though...and there are some tricks to choosing there. Still, it sounds like you're leaning toward lovebirds, so I won't go into them. Give me a shout if you want, I'm usually around.

We used to have a parakeet named Chuckie. Great bird ... would come out of his cage and eat breakfast with us (he loved toast and eggs). Then one time we got to thinking it'd be great if he had a friend for when we were gone. Bought another parakeet and Chuckie became very sad and soon passed away. (We gave away the "new" bird but not in time. ) Made us feel terrible. Chuckie was our baby and in trying to do something nice for him ... I think we blew it. We buried him in our yard (then in Decatur).

Hadn't thought about Chuckie for some time now. (Sniff)

I get this sort of question as it pertains to reptiles. Yes, I know that birds are only phylogenetically reptiles, but there are some principles that cross over.
1. Do all the research you can on sveral particular species; find out what their needs are in terms of housing, diet, lighting, legality of ownership in your state/county/city.

2. Consider the longevity of several species, and what that means in terms of your life down the road.

3. Consider adopting one from the local animal shelter or humane society instead of buying one from a pet store.

Good good good questions for parrots etc.. Parakeets and other budgy types aren't terribly long lived. Finches aren't going to be around more than two or three years, canaries a bit longer if you're lucky. Much easier pets than reptiles, I think. But messier! And a hell of a lot noisier .

hehe yep i also have reptiles and amphibians..in my area (as i used to work at vet hospitals) i haven't found anyone giving away what i was thinking about, shelters don't have any in my area either (i've checked recently)-all cat's and dogs pretty much

I'd get another parakeet maybe, but that's still a sore subject for me....so yes been totally doing the research needed....i'm just seeing the opinions of what you guys like best, I know when my heart is ready I"ll make the right choice, thanks!
