I get this sort of question as it pertains to reptiles. Yes, I know that birds are only phylogenetically reptiles, but there are some principles that cross over.
1. Do all the research you can on sveral particular species; find out what their needs are in terms of housing, diet, lighting, legality of ownership in your state/county/city.

2. Consider the longevity of several species, and what that means in terms of your life down the road.

3. Consider adopting one from the local animal shelter or humane society instead of buying one from a pet store.
