White smoke just isn't good to see anywhere but I guess it's better under the hood than out the exhaust. Head gasket is a nice wish.  Even if there aren't apparent cracks you may want to have them magnafluxed if you're going to try to assemble a real engine. Regardless, you 'will' need to check for warp if they overheated badly.
