It's a place where kids with disabilities or emotional issues can go and have their sensory needs met while finding coping strategies for dealing with those events and experiences that challenge them. The Science behind sensory integration is iffy but most of us have seen kids react well to these experiences. It's not unusual for my students to wear weighted clothing etc to try to give them extra proprioception, vestibular and sensory input but having a place to go and practice coping with sensory information is becoming more common in schools that have such large populations of students w/ autism.
