"Innocence"

Why is it that we use the same word for carnal ignorance as we do for the condition of having not commited a crime? Is there an intentional subtext of carnality being criminal? Is this healthy?

monocrow 05-17-2004 10:34 PM

I think there absolutley is, particularly in American society (as that is the only one about which I can speak with any real experience) a notion that sex is wrong. Call it a throwback to our puritan founders, or the fault of the religious right, or what have you, but it's pretty pervasive.

I used to work at a movie theater, many moons ago, and I was overwhelmed by the numbers of parents of pre-teens who would inquire as to why a film was rated PG-13 or R. If the film was violent, it was allowable. If it had a sexual theme, it was passed over.

Isn't that amazing? I mean, witnessing the act of harming or taking another's life is BETTER, in our perception, than witnessing the act of the creation of life. Even though, of course, sex (especially that which is depicted in film) serves a more hedonistic tendancy, and is not always about conception, isn't there something fundamentally better about an act of love, or even just pleasure, than an act of hate or violence?

It's the same reason that the word "shit" is more socially accepted than the work "fuck". It's not the worst thing ever if the slang word for defecation slips out... but the slang word for sex? Shame on you!

Okay, off my soapbox, now. Poor ol' soapbox.

Innocent means "not guilty".

A sexual innocent is one who is not guilty of the sins of Eve and Adam,

the carnal stain.

scotzoidman 05-18-2004 09:11 AM

Ahhh, the Adam & Eve factor pops up...

Rememeber, it wasn't an apple...it was the fruit of the tree of knowledge of Good & Evil...hmmm, AKA...

Morality!?!

And they saw that they were naked...

hey that sounds like a great idea for a web site, people see each other naked? Nahhhh, it'd never fly...

Loren 05-18-2004 10:59 AM

Oh, come on now, it's obvious!

Sex is a crime!

denny 05-18-2004 11:06 AM

Innocent of the "original sin".

Original sin may be taken to mean: (1) the sin that Adam committed; (2) a consequence of this first sin, the hereditary stain with which we are born on account of our origin or descent from Adam.

Not criminal! We are all forgiven, but when we partake we are stained by Adam. No, Lilith, not a cum stain!

Lilith 05-18-2004 11:18 AM

All of which is moot...if you believe in Lilith:p

wyndhy 05-18-2004 01:53 PM

very interesting question, belial. i actually never made the connection. i always thought of the word in its' other context. the not experienced or worldly, naive one. but it would not suprise me if it has always been intended in the criminal sense and i would bet that that connotation would only apply to girls.

Oldfart 05-18-2004 07:23 PM

Hmmmmm

The Cult of Lilith.

Damn, I'm a Lilithite. Who'd have guessed . . . . . .?

Scarecrow 05-19-2004 05:00 PM

All hail the one and only great Lilith

But aren't we all sinners out of the cradle, denny? If so, is anyone ever "innocent", if the concept covers sin in general?

I thought monocrow made a great point. We do tend to somehow think murder, violence, and war are somehow more suitable subjects for young people than something sexual.

Are we smart ... or what?
