Falling Asleep

For some odd reason I can't fall asleep every once and awhile. Counting sheep, reading, masturbating, nothing works to knock me out. For about a month once the only way I could fall asleep was with alcohol in me. Which I couldn't do if I had to work the next day. So the only sleep I was getting that was actually restful was on my days off. Any suggestions on how to knock me out without a blunt object? Does anyone else have this problem? It's not like I'm not tired. I am. Just can't get to sleep.

scotzoidman 08-24-2008 12:13 AM

You might see your doc about some sleeping pills, the new generation isn't so stupefying & addictive as the downers we had in earlier days. Lunesta worked well for me, but I couldn't stand the nasty taste in my mouth the next day. I've had bouts of insomnia in the past, but my biggest problem these days is nerve pain (neuropathy), & my sleep-help meds these days are more geared to treating that.

Lilith 08-24-2008 08:12 AM

I think too much and this happens to me a lot during the work week. I either get, do something, then start over or I lie there and make lists of things.

jseal 08-24-2008 09:06 AM

Lord Snow,

One technique that is often recommended is to schedule your sleep for the same time each day. This has helped me.

jennaflower 08-24-2008 09:10 AM

Oh how I hate when that happens! Tylenol PM works well for me.

Hope you get restful sleep soon!

(((Hugs)))

gekkogecko 08-24-2008 09:26 AM

OH, I tend to get on the 'net and blog at 3 or 4 am when I'm hit with insomnia. But like the alcohol for you, that's not a good optin when I have to workt he next day.

If you really need the chemical re-arrangement, I'd back up what schotzoid said.

But also go further: will your insurance pay for a sleep study? If so, I'd highly recommend one, before resorting to chemical means.

Casperr 08-24-2008 09:51 AM

Nobody's mentioned diet? Have a look at things like sugar intake or caffeine.

Maybe even keep a diary of when you have the insomnia-spells, and what you ate that day that was any different.

And try to lay off caffeine six hours before bedtime.

osuche 08-24-2008 11:19 AM

Chemical means:
- Tylenol PM is good
- Stay off caffeine

Behavioral:
- Don't do work or activity that engages you right before bed. Take a relaxing walk or bath or shower instead.
- Go to bed at the same time every night
- Breathe deeply and focus on your breathing/meditate if that's what does it for you

Other
- Have a glass of warm milk (especially if hunger is keeping you up)
- Get up and work for 30 minutes, then try again. Sometimes you just have to get outta bed

Lord Snow 08-24-2008 08:30 PM

I go to bed about the same time every night. Don't eat or drink after nine. Only thing I do right before bed is read, but I've done that since I learned how. If I don't have to work the next day and I don't have anything to drink I stay up and play video games or something, but I can't do that on nights I have to work. The sleep study might not be a bad idea. Like a typical geek I have asthma and allergies and either could be the cause. I know that's one of the reasons why I don't sleep well when I do. Course, it might also be similar to Lil. Just too much thought. Meditation is good when I'm having asthma problems and need to calm down my breathing, but it doesn't put me to sleep. Thanks again for the suggestions, if you think of anything else let me know.

Lilith 08-24-2008 08:32 PM

Sleep in a church pew or a chair at a faculty meeting. I always can sleep in those places :p

Lord Snow 08-24-2008 10:19 PM

<<<<<-----------atheist, no church for me. Work almost put me to sleep today. Or I should say, not being allowed to work almost put me to sleep today. I'd explain, but that's a lot of information that I don't feel like typing.

Lord Snow 05-13-2010 10:58 PM

Attack of the insomnia again. Only this time I know what's causing it and can't do anything about it. Course the real fun is my usual means of solving this problem isn't working. Right now it's caused by to much on my mind. This I usually fix by hashing it out verbally by myself. Yes, talking to yourself is bad and answering yourself is worse (done both for years and it's worked until this point). Now the fun part, my only two friends are both currently extremely busy, one with a new career and the other with work, school, and who knows what else. I come to you supportive people pleading, someone come and knock me out with sledge hammer!

marlborodasreds 05-13-2010 11:26 PM

no sledge hammer but a phone book works and no bruises

Lord Snow 05-14-2010 07:32 AM

Yes, but the sledge hammer would end my sleeping problem forever. The Yellow Pages would only work for one night.

BamaKyttn 05-14-2010 07:04 PM

I don't think my suggestion is feasible for you. I however was awake.... though I dunno if talkin to me was ever helpful.

Oldfart 05-14-2010 07:23 PM

When I was shift-working, I often had to be asleep at 6.30pm to be at work at 2am. I learned that sleep comes in waves. If you just put you head down and wait for sleep you can be awake for hours. Relax, read something boring and wait for the sleep wave to hit you. Then go directly to bed. Wait too long and the wave will pass, leaving you hanging until the next one.

Lord Snow 05-14-2010 10:29 PM

I did eventually fall asleep at 11:45ish. Luckily we didn't have any work to do today, so I'm off all weekend. Plenty of time to possibly catch up on much needed rest. Doubt I will though.

Sleeping alot on weekends could be throwing your body off for the rest of the week. Try to keep regular sleep times.

Teddy Bear 06-13-2010 10:28 PM

Just remembered, a few years ago I had trouble sleeping. My doctor told me to take 3 mg. of melatonin apx. 30 to 45 min. before bed. Melatonin is a natural substance made in your brain. I found it helped me. It is in the vitamin section in the drug store.

I googled it and found alot on it. Below is a small part ......

What is melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland , a small gland in the brain. Melatonin helps control your sleep and wake cycles. Very small amounts of it are found in foods such as meats, grains, fruits, and vegetables. You can also buy it as a supplement.

What does natural melatonin do in the body?
Your body has its own internal clock that controls your natural cycle of sleeping and waking hours. In part, your body clock controls how much melatonin your body makes. Normally, melatonin levels begin to rise in the mid- to late evening, remain high for most of the night, and then drop in the early morning hours.

Light affects how much melatonin your body produces. During the shorter days of the winter months, your body may produce melatonin either earlier or later in the day than usual. This change can lead to symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or winter depression.1

PantyFanatic 06-13-2010 11:03 PM

That ^^^, a bottle of Wild Turkey, or tip over the scoot of somebody wearing colors and you'll go to sleep.

Oldfart 06-14-2010 06:35 PM

Just calling it a scoot'd get you a few hours sleep.

Lord Snow 06-14-2010 08:13 PM

Don't like whiskey and the idea of dumping someone's bike doesn't suit me. Especially since I know I'd be beating the shit out of the person that tips mine. Actually, scoot is old slang for a bike.

Teddy, what does it mean when you want to sleep more in the summer than in the winter. I love the cold. I'm actually more awake during the winter than the summer. The heat just kills me. Makes me sleepy all the time.

mynadsonurchin 06-17-2010 01:22 PM

masturbate again........& more vigorously. :spank:

Lord Snow 06-17-2010 07:47 PM

Ummm, for me it kind of doesn't matter how often or how vigorous I masturbate. If my body says "you're awake and not tired" I'm awake and not tired. The release from masturbation or sex doesn't tire me out.

I don't play a doctor on tv but if I did I'd say heat makes you sleepy? lol. I dunno, something to do with those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer?

Lord Snow 07-15-2010 11:15 PM

Maybe it's because it's way to damn hot, sticky icky to move. Lack of movement means atrify, atrify leads to laziness, which leads to me sleeping? Or maybe I just watch way to much House?

dicksbro 07-18-2010 01:33 PM

I figure if you got four or five gals to ravish your body for the next ten or twelve hours; having them do all sorts of insidious things to you ... you'll probably get tired and then they could sooth and massage you while you slept. Works every time I've had that done.

Actually, I've never been lucky enough to have had that happen, but I think it'd work. :)

Teddy Bear 07-18-2010 02:46 PM

Great idea DB!!

Is there a sign-up sheet somewhere? :)

I mean i'm willing to try and help a fellow Pixie get some sleep. ;)

jseal 07-18-2010 04:48 PM

Now that I think about it, I've been having trouble getting to sleep.

Lord Snow 07-18-2010 06:38 PM

You know, I'm really not the multiple type. I'm more of a one woman kind of guy. Quality, not quantity. Now I'm not saying the women here at Pixies don't have the quality. When it comes these lovely ladies, there's just to many to please and I would only want to give my best performance.

Some southerner you are. You're keeping it colder than a Connecticut summer where the high is 85f.

Seems to be hot and humid everywhere this year. Even in the north east yankee state of Rhode Island.

Not sure why you said what your AC is set at. All that does is show that you don't like the humid heat anymore then us yanks do. My AC is set at 72 also.

Stay cool peeps!!

Lord Snow 07-23-2010 11:24 PM

I know, my relatives are in CT are complaining. I keep telling them they should come down here and feel the real crappy weather.

It's not that southerners don't like it anymore than we do, it's just that us yankees (I was dragged here kicking and screaming) aren't nearly as used to having a/c. Besides......Bama puts off enough heat she has to keep it cold. Happens when a woman is that damn HOT!

scotzoidman 08-01-2010 12:01 AM

I've found a great way to get to sleep: mp3 player...only downside is the earbuds block off sound so well, takes something this side of a nuclear explosion to wake me up...

Lord Snow 08-01-2010 11:02 AM

I can't sleep with something like that. I toss and turn to much.

As for why I said that? because I'm a heartless bitch and I was rubbing it in my dearly beloved exboyfriends face that MY room although empty but for me and my kitty it a cool and comfy 70 degrees now. So, anymore questions PUNKIN? :kisser:

:strolls out hummin an emimem song:
