Lunar eclipse to turn moon red 11-08-03
Thought I'd share this..
Stargazers across North and South America, Europe and Africa will watch the full moon dim into a dark, ruddy orb over the weekend as the moon drifts through Earth's shadow in the latest celestial event this year to pull eyes skyward. Weather cooperating, people in the eastern United States, South America, Europe and Africa will witness the entire eclipse; it will already be under way when the moon rises around sunset in the western United States, and it will not be visible at all in Asia and Australia. The eclipse reaches totality at 8:06 p.m. Saturday night, EST. That stage -- when the moon, Earth and sun are lined up precisely and the moon passes through the darkest part of Earth's shadow -- lasts just 24 minutes. Unlike eclipses of the sun, which can damage viewers' unprotected eyes, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye or binoculars. Hope to be able to go out and see it.. |
I'm going to hobble down the stairs for this, no question!
|
well I'm heading out the door - don't know about hobbling :D
|
I'll carry you down Steph................
Low cloud cover here................... would be nice to catch a glimpse. |
We are gonna be at a party out in the boonies and I should get a great view. My kids came home all excited talking about it too. I am glad they love the night skies as much as I do.

Oh NO! The world is not ready for you back in the streets yet. You may be able to save your self a tough trip ("trip";)... get it? lol:D) down the stairs and have a better vantage point from a window above city obstructions. Now go wash your window.:) Much of the US is threatened with overcast sky tonight. Here is a link to live astrocameras. http://www.universetoday.com/am/pub...dex_11.html#789 |
I was thinking of heading out to the roof since it is flat outside the computer room. I was also thinking of cleaning the window :D

Great!:D Don't forget to do your bedroom window......... and pull that curtain on the right back a little more please. |
too cloudy to see the moon!~~~~~~~or maybe too drunk to focus!~~~~~~~~~~~~well it is 11:52 Sat night!

We were driving back from the "city" after shopping and dining in our favorite Mexican resturant. The heater core in the vehicle decided that it would go out tonight (20 degrees temp) so we were wiping the windows with napkins from the resturant -- and I wanted to see this lunar event... so, Cobalt pulled over onto a gravel road, and turned the vehicle north... :D
The windows were so fogged up because we have no heat (no heater core working), so we opened the doors and froze as we viewed the "red" moon. It was really neat... and the kids now know that mom is crazy.. lol |
I was out in an open field and the night was crystalline. To the left of me was the reddened moon cloaked in shadow and to the right you could see the Milky Way in the dark night skies.
Yes I'm bein' followed by a moon shadow moon shadow moon shadow. Leapin' and hoppin' on a moon shadow moon shadow moon shadow. And if I ever lose my hands lose my power lose my land - Oh if I ever lose my hands Ooh I won't have to work no more. And if I ever lose my eyes if my colours all run dry Yes if I ever lose my eyes Ooh I won't have to cry no more. Yes I'm bein' followed by a moon shadow moon shadow moon shadow. Leapin' and hoppin' on a moon shadow moon shadow moon shadow. And if I ever lose my legs I won't moan and I won't beg Oh if I ever lose my legs Ooh I won't have to walk no more. And if I ever lose my mouth all my teeth North and South Yes if I ever lose my mouth Ooh I won't have to talk. Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light. It was clear as a bell here......and I tried taking pics but I dunno what I got yet! It was really a cool eclipse this time! It's just under the freezing mark but I ventured out 8-9 times anyway! Brrrrrrrrrr!
|
Got to see the moon coming over the ridge just as we finish the auction, it was already at 1/2.. Way Cool.
Hour home looked again was at full and very red, right now it is back to 1/2 and through the light cloud layer it is vary mystic...... |
missed it because i am in the southern hemisphere and the 11th day of the eighth month (August) has long gone :(
|
m45,
It was also a good show in Maryland. A bit brisk, but a good show nonetheless. |
Good show here in Illinois (at least near Peoria). Looked just like the picture at the site PF recommended. Beautiful. Glad to have seen it. (Although I wish it would do it when it was warmer. :D)
|
I took my sons t the Science Center to see it from up top where the obsourity (sp) is it was quite a site and they really enjoyed it also it was very cold could use some warming up.

It sure has GG.:) But maybe you’ll be able to catch it in the 8th day of the eleventh month (November). Opps! Guess you missed that too.:( You’re going to have to move a little to the east. LMAO:D |
We all went out & sat in my driveway to watch it. Nearly froze to death and ended up not staying out there the whole time but running in & out of the house at 5 min. intervals.
When the 3 were completely lined up & the moon was in full shadow, there was a reddish glow all around its edge. This was the sunsets & sunrises occurring all around the world. (At least thats what they said on my local news channel & I thought it was cool.) teddy :) :) :) |
Teddy Bear,
I wonder what it must have looked like if standing on the Moon. Just imagine it, as the Earth passed in front of the Sun, the light would have snapped out out, and the Earth would have seemed like a circle of brightness or ring of fire. The refraction of the Sun through the Earth’s atmosphere would have created some sort of ring of color – I’m uncertain what the color(s) would have been, bout I’m willing to bet that it was impressive! I wonder if any of the great cities, or perhaps the Eastern Seaboard of the US, or maybe the lights of Europe would have been visible. It is at times like these that I regret being too old to leave the Earth! |
@#*BRATZ-A FRATZ-A CRUBUL FUTS#!@
It’s a glorious, clear, bright day today.:( Very unlike last night with a cloud-ceiling of 8m. Had to watch the eclipse on remote cam. Isn’t it wonderful though.:D I know Edwin Hubble would have LOVED to had remote cam on many a crisp eve.:) Only us amateurs put on snow suites to star gaze now. And more data is recorded each hour than was gathered in a year before 1960. FANTASTIC! JUST FANTASTIC!!:D |
zoom-boom to the moon Alice!

jseal, wow, what a unique thought..... standing on the moon and looking back at earth. It would be incredibly beautiful I'd think. I'm taking a wild guess that the refraction of the sun through the earth's atmosphere would be like a rainbow..... capturing the whole spectrum of colors. Have there ever been any space flights at the time of an eclipse? Are there pictures of this somewhere? I do recall seeing pictures of great cities taken from space, not from the moon though, I think just from the space-craft as it obited. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh PF...... ya got any insight on this? Pics perhaps. :D teddy :) :) |
Saw the eclipse last night...spectacular up here in the northern latitudes...

That would make for a spectacular shot. Neat thought jseal.
I believe the earth halo, as seen from the moon, would largely be reddish orange. You are exactly right that the longer red light waves would be refracted by our nitrogen atmosphere. But it would most likely absorb the shorter blue waves. I don’t know if we had any photo capable satellite equipment in alignment at the precise time, but the same emissions you saw reflected back from the moon last night, has to be an impressive aura around the earth. There are a ton of sites with pictures of and from space. Everything from artsy prints and poster to GPS monument maps. Here’s a couple, but do your own search for the type you’re interested in. http://www.boondocksnet.com/cb/post...ce_regions.html http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/ You can see your house with this one. ;) http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/sseop/clickmap/ Here’s one of my favorite pics. |
mmm how far east is that PF???? get to new Zealand and then a very lot further I get to south america Dunno if that will be a whole lot of help LOL
|
You could slide over to Pago Pago.:) That would give you the extra day you sounded like you needed.;) LOL
I was actually joking about the date you gave, but you are right that you would have to have been in South America for this eclipse at least.:D |
