Lilith, I and my son have had to use mouth guards before because of grinding our teeth in our sleep. My guard was from the dentist and cost a fortune! His was a simple mouth guard you can buy in any sporting goods department, like athletes wear, and worked just as well (his dentist recommended this). You might want to try one of these first to see how you react to wearing it. Just dip the mouth guard in VERY hot water for a second or two and put it in your mouth and bite down, it will conform to your teeth to fit like it should. Hope this helps.

Wellllllll I already dished out the $$$$$$$$$$ just waiting to pick it up. I would have tried the sports one.

I have/had TMJ. I used to wear a night guard every night so that I could at least function the next day (severe headaches, lock jaw, all kinds of fun). I also had 4 1/2 years of braces when I was a teenager to re-align my teeth so that my jaw could actually relax when my mouth closed.

I haven't worn any sort of day or night guard since then. I have to watch things like chewing gum or eating things that require a lot of chewing. Thankfully, I haven't had lock jaw in probably 10 years.

Lilith ice crunching is very bad for TMJ.

I know but I have no willpower to stop. I'm no good at restraining my desires.

Well, I did grind my teeth very bad,.......... key word, did, just last Friday I had all my upper teeth pulled and a couple of lower ones. I inherited bad teeth from my dad, which didn't help.
Now I just have to wait till I can afford dentures. May be this January, insurance company will only pay a max. of $1000.00 per year. Really sucks, I like to chew my food. Can't live without my blender now.

as another TMJ'er I can say that it is worth it...just takes a bit of getting used to wearing it while going to sleep.

I grind my teeth too...keeps my bf up at night, he says it is horrible. Unfortunately at the moment I can't afford to have the guard made. I have tried the ones from the drugstore, but I just ended up pulling it out of my mouth while I was sleeping. So I am real hesitant about forking out the cash for the one from the dentist. Although he says it would be much more comfortable and most likely I wouldn't end up removing it in my sleep. I need to do something soon, I feel terrible about ruining my bf's sleep and the jaw and neck pain I suffer is horrible. So Lilith, let me know how yours works out for you once you get it.

I used to grind my teeth really bad when I was very young. I stopped when my father said "stop grinding your teeth or I'm gonna pull the damn things out!".

Good ol' dad! Always coming up with cheap and violent cures for stuff like that!

Wonder why I was grinding my teeth.
