Bras for miles: the cups runneth over... Wed Apr 19, 11:47 AM ET
NICOSIA (Reuters) - Women on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus hope to form the world's longest chain of bras with the twin aims of heightening awareness of breast cancer and winning a place in the Guinness Book
of Records.
The Cypriot, British and Dutch organizers hope to string together as many as 100,000 bras on April 30, beating the current record of 79,000 bras held by Singapore, and forming a 56 mile chain. "It's an odd thing to do, but it's the perfect way to get the message across. Its important that people are aware of the risks, and the need for regular screening," said Louise van Rooij, a Dutch resident of Cyprus.
Women as far afield as Alaska have contributed bras, including Betty Boothroyd, Britain's first female speaker of the House of Commons and a regular visitor to the holiday island.
Breast cancer kills about 400,000 women worldwide each year, and doctors say regular screening, especially for women over 50, is vital for early detection which is crucial to a woman's chances of survival.

Global sex survey: guess who's satisfied By Andrew Stern
Wed Apr 19, 10:14 AM ET
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Around the world, middle-aged and elderly men tend to be more satisfied with their sex lives than women in the same age group, a survey released on Wednesday said.
Substantial majorities of people who are married or who have a partner remain sexually active throughout the second half of their lives, according to a survey of 27,500 people aged 40 to 80 in 29 countries.
"There was very little effect of age on sexual well-being," though other factors such as health problems or depression had a substantial impact, said
lead researcher Edward Laumann of the University of Chicago in a telephone interview.
The survey published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior looked at how they viewed their sex lives, their health, and their happiness.
It found that a greater proportion of people in Europe, North America, and Australia, where men and women have more or less equal relations, enjoyed sex physically and emotionally, Laumann said.
A smaller percentage of people reported satisfying sex lives in male-dominated cultures in poorer countries, the research showed.
But the gender gap persisted around the world.
"There's a systematic disparity between men and women, where men are on the average substantially -- or about 10 points -- higher in their levels of satisfaction as women in that country," he said.
Most of those surveyed at random were married, though there was an obvious bias toward participants who were willing to talk about sex, and toward urban populations in less-developed nations.
"Pleasure is not part of the story" in sexually conservative cultures in the Far East -- China, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, Laumann said. "Procreation is the rationale for sex. Many women ... characterize sex as dirty, as a duty, something they endure" -- and often stop having it after age 50.
But roughly two-thirds of adults in Western nations reported their sex lives were very to extremely satisfying -- though some countries appeared happier
than others.
Roughly four out of five middle-aged to older Austrians, for instance, rated their sex lives highly, while considerably fewer adults in France and Sweden
shared that sentiment.
In the United States, about three-quarters of men and two-thirds of women reported they were very satisfied with the physical and emotional aspects of their sex lives.
In Japan, by contrast, just 18 percent of the men and 10 percent of the women answered positively about their sex lives. And in Taiwan, only 7 percent of the women said sex was very important in their lives.
Satisfying sex is not the same as a satisfying sexual relationship, Laumann said the survey showed.
"People who are dating have higher levels of sexual satisfaction than (married) couples ... but when they think the relationship is temporary, they're not going to feel as positive about sex," he said.

US comedian called world's 'unsexiest' man Wed Apr 19, 9:50 AM ET
BOSTON (Reuters) - Comedian Gilbert Gottfried, the voice of the Aflac Inc. duck in television commercials for the insurer, was crowned "unsexiest man in the world" by an alternative newspaper on Tuesday.
"The parrot-voiced, pickle-faced comic is to sexy what Kryptonite is to Superman," The Boston Phoenix wrote.
New York Yankees pitcher Randy Johnson came in second followed by film critic Roger Ebert, television psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw and Fox television co-host Alan Colmes. Even actor Brad Pitt made the list, as the newspaper's 100th-least sexy man.
Osama bin Laden clocked in at number eight.
George Steinbrenner, owner of the Yankees -- arch-rivals to the Boston Red Sox -- also made the list. "Come on, we live in Boston, you knew it was coming," the Phoenix said.
Others included pop star Michael Jackson and nasal-voiced rapper Mike Diamond of the Beastie Boys.
Gottfried has had numerous television and film roles including a year as a cast member on NBC's "Saturday Night Live."

Texas college bars students from posing for Playboy 40 minutes ago
SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Baylor University in Waco, Texas, which bills itself as the world's largest Baptist college, has threatened to discipline female
students if they pose for Playboy magazine, which is trying to recruit models from the college.
Playboy photographers came to Baylor's hometown seeking models for a photo spread on women of the Big 12 college athletic conference, of which the college is a member.
Baylor Vice President for Student Life Samuel W. Oliver sent an e-mail to women students this week warning that any who "associate" with Playboy would be subject to the university's disciplinary processes.
"Playboy is clearly antithetical to Baylor's mission and associating with the magazine would be a violation of the code of conduct," Oliver wrote in the e-mail. University officials said punishment could include suspension.
Baylor, known for its conservative outlook, did not allow dancing on campus until 10 years ago.
A spokesman for Playboy, known for its nude centerfold pictures, declined to comment on the e-mail.
The threatened punishment was met with a yawn by students on campus.
One woman, who professed no desire to pose for Playboy, said Baylor officials had "more important things to worry about" and wondered if male students
would face similar punishment if they were seen reading an issue of Playboy featuring Baylor women.
