Summer/Winter Reading Lists

Since I am beginning my summer vacation and am gonna have a bit of time on my hands I was hoping for some good suggestions of books to read. Any good ones?

Pat Conroy writes fiction...I guess you'd call them dramas. But they'll make you laugh, cry, and feel wonderful. Conroy makes love with words -- some of the best usage of the English language I have ever read. He writes about rites of passage and life experiences.....

Um, I would suggest the Avalon series by Marrion Zimmer Bradley for something different (fiction -- historical / fantasy). In order:
- The Fall of Atlantis
- The Forest House
- Lady of Avalon
- Priestess of Avalon (touches on some characters in Lady of Avalon)
- Mists of Avalon

I recommend anything by John Irving, because he is my favorite author. If you're looking for a starting point, I recommend The Cider House Rules or A Prayer For Owen Meany.

yes Lilith John Irving is a must read for a short list of others I love

Christopher Moore - a good start with him would be Practucal Demon Keeping kind of a horror comdie

Elmore Leonard - hard to recomend just one book by him but a good start might be Out of Sight he true one of the greatest crime fiction writers out there

Tom Robbins - start with Even Cowgirls Get The Blue and I'm sure you'll have to read everything he's writen

Carl Hiaasen - not sure if you read anything before knbow you correct steph on his name in a thread if you haven't read anything by him

Tim Dorsey - Florida Road Kill the first book I've read by him and I think his first book but it will have you LOL'in you ass off

Tim Sandlin - Skipped Parts is one more must read

Well if you loved the movie, Lilith... the book is even better! Yes, I am one of those people that see movies and and comment on the book. The movie was wonderful, but it was nothing that a book could provide. I'm actually re-reading that book when I have the time. :)

Thats what happens a lot with books which are made into films, unfortunately. There are some exceptions though.

Off the top of my head.....you really should read "Cider House Rules". And because I read them about the same time..thinking of that one always brings "Snow Falling on Cedars" to my mind, one of my all time favorites.

One of the funniest things I've ever read was by Christopher Buckley, and was called "Thank You For Smoking."

Tom King is a Canadian writer I absolutely adore, whom you may not have heard of. If I only get to recommend one, I'd say "Green Grass, Running Water." If you like Gabriel Garcia-Marquez at all (and if you don't know...put him on the list NOW ;)), run don't walk and order it. Which, unfortunately, you'll probably have to do.

OH, and on the non-fiction front.....I think you'll really like this one, Lil. It's called "Time, Love, Memory." By, oh hell, brb....Jonathan Weiner. It's kind of a semi-historical account of the discovery of the connection between behavior and genetics. It's really accessible to the non-scientist. At least, I think it is. It captures the magic of science, what makes us willing to do it.

And for a little tiny book to slip in your bag, there "The Ice Finders" by Bolles. Again, history meets sociology....about geology this time. But it's really a lovely little read.

"The Doomsday Book"~ Connie Willis...Sort of historical fiction/fantasy. Time travel back to the days of the black plague. Very interesting read...

"Good in Bed"~ Jennifer Weiner...Laugh out loud funny!!! Read this last summer on vacation.

I've been addicted recently to some not so well written, but fun vampire slayer type books by Laurell K. Hamilton

"A Widow for one Year"~John Irving.....just about anything he's written is good!

"Parable of the Talents"~ Octavia E. Butler

If you like any science fiction or fantasy type books I have a slew of those I could recommend. I read on average a book or two a week almost all of which I enjoy, so my tastes are quite varried.

I enjoy the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich...light reading, a little frustration, a little sex (maybe) and lots of laughs. Light reading that doesn't require a lot of deep thought, just pure enjoyment. Good beach books.. lol

I highly recomend the series by Richard Paul Evans of "The Locket and" The Christmas box." and his other book "The looking glass" they all tie together and are a great read, I couldn't put them down.

Actually STO had suggested Hamilton to me awhile back and I got A Kiss of Shadows for Christmas but have not been able to really get into due to school reading responsibilities. I'll try to finish that one first!

As I mentioned earlier about Laurell K. Hamilton, I have read 6 of the Anita Blake series and the 2 Merry Gentry(A kiss of Shadows is one of the later). I read all these in a matter of a few weeks. I picked it up on a whim from my local bookstore and though I find the writing a bit elementary, its my new guilty pleasure. I really enjoyed the Merry Gentry series.

I'm reading one nice steamy brand new trashy romance novel right now. It's by Lisa Kleypas, and it is called Suddenly You. I just got it early last week, off the new sellers section. Very steamy, set in 1836, however, I could see quite a bit of it even relating to life today.

Like I've said twice all ready- steamy. ;) Quite a lot of sex scenes for a historical romance. ;)

Well, I don't know how it's going to be yet, but I just bought Sting's autobiography. I don't like Oprah, but watched one with my mom about him and his life, and this book, and Oprah read excerpts from it, and ... the book flows like poetry. It's just.. the snippets she read were like.. honey.

So I bought it. I'll let you know how it goes. :)
