BEIJING authorities plan to issue special cards to married women that will allow them to get condoms for free from vending machines placed throughout the city, state media said today.

The machines, which would begin operating next month, would initially appear at 100 different locations in the city of 13 million people, the Beijing Times reported.

At the start of the pilot project, 60,000 married women would be issued with cards that entitled them to 12 packs of condoms a year, the paper said.

The machines would help remove the awkwardness women felt when buying condoms from salespeople, it added.

Birth control is a top government priority in China and urban couples are usually restricted to having just one child, facing severe penalties if they decide to have a second baby.

Unfortunately, I understand that by being restricted to one child, a lot of Chinese couples kill new-born daughters in hopes of holding out for a son. :(

db.. it is my understanding that you are correct. From things I have read, this is due to the fact that in China, when parents are elderly it is the SONS responsibility to take care of them... often brining them into his home.. thus.. if they have a daughter they have no "guarantee" of being able to be taken care of when they are old..

the theory of killing daughters and holding a son was EXIST long long time ago.

Now it doesn't really exist any more. coz government doesn't allow them to kill the baby any more.

In legal, they can not kill the baby, but there are still some people who are lower class and still think the traditional old fashion way to keep a son. then they do it. But this is very Illegal.

Do you know that if you are living in China right now, and you know any body i mean ANY body who kill children or Aborted unborn child expecially unborn girl. IF you know and report to the Chinese govertnment or police. you will get $10000 CHinese dollars.Then the police put that person into jail /prison.

Yes and tied to chairs and ignored.......because there are so many of them abandoned by parents who wanted a boy.

I saw a very interesting production on baby girls born in China and it was heartbreaking to watch......it was a documentary shown on the CBC, The Passinate Eye.

in North America they put people in jail and prison. after the person finished, they came out and be a criminal again. hahhahha

I stand by my convictions that over in China "somewhere" there are female babies being killed at birth(in the rural areas) and that some women are having abortions and others are abandoning their daughters at orphanges. for me, I always afraid of criminal, because it it too dangerous to give them a second chance. What if they did it again and this time more people die ? dam! i think extreamly dangerous. in asia if we report any criminal crime to the police, we know for sure that the poilce will taking care of it very well without any worry. But here we can never sure about it, coz what if the criminal has their lawyer and then he/she can not be in jail for the rest of his life. he can be outside walking around. any body's life is in risk.

I think any body who kill human SHOULD be in prison for the rest of his life and never can walk on the street again. don't give him/her a second chance. too dangerous.

somtime i think if American has the criminal law just like Asia. I wonder how American react to it. if you kill too many people, you should be dead as well, if you have some criminal record, you can never walk on the street or come home again.

Had you hear the News last Summer 16 criminal guys killed by the police govertnment in Vietnam Saigon >? these 16 guys are very very bad guys, they are gangs, they have a group of people go to rope people, rape people, killed so many people and all the criminal things you can name of. The police tried to catched them for so long but no evidence. until last year they got them. and was on court for serveral months until the final date. THey let every one seen on TV how the Govertnment Shot on their heads and let them died.

Now I wonder if American can really do this to criminal ones ?:confused:
