We have a winner!!!!

Yes!!! I spent the afternoon at the sewage treatment plant!

Aside from the lovely aroma I also found out that the city has knowingly supplied my neighborhood with contaminated water for the past 8 years. We have called and asked for the past 8 years. They repeatedly told us it was safe. I spoke with the supervisor yesterday and was told the city is now admitting guilt and that when the water enters my house and is red or smells like chlorine or sulphur it is unsafe for consumption. We have asked for 8 years. I know of at least 6 women on my block who have miscarried over the past 8 years. Was told it is gonna be fixed by August......

Damn Lilith! Ain't that the shit!? I've heard of this miscarriage thing before.......but round here it is with the people living so close to the electricity lines that run through the valley! And to this day, the officials deny any harm is being done. How can it be safe if you can take a flourescent light and walk close to those lines and they light up? The closer you get , the brighter they get! Uncle Fester would be proud! Women in the immediate area have the highest miscarriage rate around. And now they are looking into the cancer aspect too!

We have our own well for water....and filters and lights galore on it......but I know the smell you are speaking of.

Have they said how they will rectify and/or compensate for any long term effects? I mean, you can't put a price on an auto-aborted baby.....but wtf do they plan on doing about the denial and subsequent horrors?

Go get um g/f!

Lilith
04-08-2003, 04:56 PM
Lixy~ I think it would be impossible to prove any thing, the evidence was destroyed:(

They said they were doing something called "pigging" where they shove foam filters in the fire hydrants and flush the lines. Water pipes are bursting all through the neighborhood, 6 on my street alone. They said that's good cause then they have to come out and clean them and install new ones. They said the water is contaminated by bacteria that is sitting in the pipes in dirt etc stuck in the pipes. They said it was not e.coli but did not say what exactly it is. I am gonna take it to a private lab on it's next flare up.

Sometimes ya gotta know and then (and I am hoping this isn't the case) when you find out the culprit and the effects.....you kinda wish you didn't know. I wish you the best Lilith! I'm keeping good thoughts that if this problem is now being rectified, that the effects will wear with time and then all will be ok for you and your neighbors! Keep us informed if you can! Luck and good news be yours!

I am/was a professional water consultant. The problems that you have described with your water can be troublesome.

The red color in your water is reflective of the iron content. Anything over .3 will start staining and will cause pipes & such to fill up with particles and evenutally clog them up. Water Heaters and appliances as well.

Cheyanne
04-08-2003, 10:31 PM
The sulphur smell is also indicative of high iron content in your water. Did you notice the smell being only on the hot water side or on both cold and hot?

The swimming pool smell in your water is indeed chlorine. In any city water setting, you will have some residual chlorine flowing out of your taps. However, chlorine is highly corosive and in itself poisioness. Chloring levels out of your tap water SHOULD NOT be above .5 (.1 being the lowest residual acceptable)

I don't know where you live, but there are Federal Guidelines that municipalities must meet in order to provide safe water to residents. Go to the National Sanitation Foundations website (www.nsf.com) and you can get some idea of what the guidelines are.

Another item to keep in mind - with that high degree of iron levels in your water (indicative by the rotten egg smell) there is a chance that Iron Bacteria may be present. While in itself not a health hazard, it is like a carrier to many other items that should not be in your water. Cryptspuridium could be present. This is a know health hazard.

Cheyanne
04-08-2003, 10:36 PM
Giradia is another parasite that could be present in your water if you test for high iron bacteria.

Chlorine will kill certain types of bacteria in a water supply. If you are noticing high chlorine counts, that would mean that the city tests indicated high levels of "something" they would want to kill.

Cheyanne
04-08-2003, 10:43 PM
This is what I would recommend that you do. First of all - lab tests on water is very expensive and can range from $300 to $400 per test. Now that the city is admiting guilt, the EPA should become involved and they shoud do testing. But I wouldn't wait. Call around to various labs and find out how much tests would cost you. Ask for test specifically on
1) iron bacteria
2) nitrates
3) Cryptospridium
4) Giraldia
5) Coliform bacteria
these are the 5 troublemakers.

Another suggestion - if you do not have one already, purchase a pre-filter for your home and place it inside, just where the water enters your house.

Also, and this is very important. Purchase a reverse osmosis drinking water system (or R.O. System).

This type of water filtration system will purify your water up to 99.9% pure. It will also filter out the "bad" stuff in the water - items that I have mentioned as well as risidual chlorine.

I could go on and on about the water situations that I have encountered... it makes me angry. The government (local and federal) are so worried about terriorists contaminating our water supply, they don't look at what they do or don't do to provide us with safe water.

If you need more information please don't hesitate to PM me.

Cheyanne---Do you know of any other causes of Giardia?A few years ago,I had diarreah and anything that I ate would go right thru me.I was hospitalised and the tests showed Giardia. My Dr.
told me that it is usually gotten from drinking water when camping,or drinking water that is contaminated,I haven't been camping in over 25yrs. & have our own well.My wife had our well water tested& it was fine.Just to be sure, when I make concentrated Orange Juice or Crystal Lite, powdered Gatorade, etc.,I still use bottled spring water that my wife gets in
jugs from the grocery store! It hasn't acted up since but scared me

If you are worried about the whole water thing (as I think many should with the feds/local govts. conveniently just raising the amounts of contaminants/chemicals allowed so towns can find a loophole to get around the expense of cleaning it up), Cheyenne mentioned the Reverse Osmosis process. While buying a whole system is in fact very expensive, many grocery stores have the machines that dispense R.O. water and you can come and refill gallon jugs at a mere 39 cents or so. My family's been doing this for several years now ever since we noticed the chlorine smell growing stronger and the taste turning funny. It has been a cheap and easy alternative to the problems that come along with city water.

Cheyanne

Irish - Giardia is an organic compound that enters the water supply via decomposing plants, animals, insects and such. What it does as it enters the digestive system is attack the walls of the intestinal tract and causes diarreah, vomiting, and in some cases in the elderly or infirm bleeding and eventually death. In Wisconsin about 4 years ago they had Girdia in the municiple water supply. People died because of it. Federal Law states that any municipality must test their water on a consitant basis to assure that it is safe to drink. They had tested but ignored the results. All they had to do was place carbon filters throughout the system and it would have taken care of the problem.

Giardia is organic. Since you live where you have a well, you should shock your well at least once a year or twice a year. If you live in an older home or the pipes leading from your well are older than that can be a breeding ground for Giardia. If you have high levels of Iron Bacteria in your water, chances are you can have other organic matter there as well.

One of the things you can do without going to a huge expense if purchase a carbon filter system. You can get them from Home Depot, Menards, any home improvement store. They will run about $100 and are very easy to put in in you are mechanically inclined. All you have to do is make sure you change the carbon filter every 3-5 months at least. That type of filration system will put your mind at ease. Make sure that it is NSF certified. A blue round logo with white NSF letters inside the circle should be located on the box.

Another thing that I would suggest, depending on the type of well you have and well pump.

Check the well seal and screen in the well vent. The seal shouldn't have any type of leaks in it at all and the screen should be intact or present. During certain times of the year (season changes) insects and small larvea can enter your well system and that could have been your problem since your test came back negative.

You can't be too safe.

Cheyanne
04-09-2003, 10:16 PM
Irish - if you have any questions about how to shock your well, you can do it yourself without a professional expense, PM me or ask me on this thread. There may be others who would like to know too.

I am glad that Giardia didn't get you!!! Then we wouldn't have had the pleasure of your many posts!!!!

[i]Cheyenne mentioned the Reverse Osmosis process. While buying a whole system is in fact very expensive, many grocery stores have the machines that dispense R.O. water and you can come and refill gallon jugs at a mere 39 cents or so.

While I highly agree with BCG, a RO System can cost anywhere between $175 and up to $1700, in some instances a simple carbon filter at the point of use (tap) would work as well.
In the state that I live in, there are no regulations on the use and dispensing of RO water in grocery stores. Depending on the amount of water that goes through those systems, filters and the RO membrane must be changed regularly!!!

I guess what I am saying is that I would rather depend upon myself to do that rather than hope that I am actually getting pure water from one of those machines...

BCG - I am glad that your family is taking the lead and buying water elseware. Have them check into one of those PUR faucet mount filters or even one of those under the sink filters. If they are just wanting the smell and taste out of the water that will work for them. Eventually they will save money and it is more convenient than lugging gallon jugs of water from store to car and then car to store.

Oh and Lilith, I didn't mean to take over your thread!!!!!

Shall we talk about sex in the shower???? Water related!! :)

Lilith
04-09-2003, 11:21 PM
I don't wanna ever get in water again now Cheyanne:o...........lol just kidding!

The city lady admitted to me there in front of the entire class that there was in fact iron bacteria present in the city pipes in my neighborhood. We do not have signs of the contamination all the time. I would say once or twice a month for a day each instance. It was said that this is the result of the bacteria and stuff it is growing in becoming loose and making it's way through the system. I have been thinking about the warnings pregnant women receive about not consuming certain soft cheeses due to the bacteria that they can harbor. I can't believe the bacteria that is present in my water would be any safer. I am going to at least consult and atty. They should not be permitted to lie and risk peoples health.

Now about that shower sex...............How many of us can fit in your shower?

Cheyanne
04-10-2003, 11:18 AM
Iron Bacteria is one of the most simple forms of contamination that can be stopped. I can't believe that she (city) just stated that blanket fact without more of an explanation to all of you.

Iron Bacteria can be killed with a minimal about of chlorine. If the city is chlorinating their water by EPA standards, there shouldn't be Iron Bacteria present in the water system at all. How stupid are they??? If iron bacteria is present then other things are present!!!!!!

You would do better in addition to an attorney to notify the EPA. If the city isn't introducing enought treatment into the water, then they are putting the people at risk for anything!!!!

Iron Bacteria is not harmful in itself, pretty much a nusance. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/water/dwg/febact.htm
http://www.lenntech.com/iron-bacteria.htm
(Couple of links)

Having Iron Bacteria present in a municipal water system however tells me that the city isn't treating their water up to standards and is putting residents at risk. This is not acceptable!

Cheyanne

Oh, BTW - I believe we can fit at least 3 in our shower!!!! However our big tub (with jets) can fit at least 5 comfortably!!! ;) The two of us and maybe 3 pixies men????? I will let you pick... :)

Wow, after reading all this about water, I'm thinking maybe we should all bathe in champaign and drink wine with our dinners.

But, you're not alone. I know Peoria (near me) had problems last year with public swimming pools getting contaminated. They said it occurred because children (sure, blame it on the kids) had potty accidents while they were swimming, but it affected several pools and I hadn't heard of it happening before.

Is nothing safe?
