A video said by its makers to be the first Israeli Arab porn movie is stirring up a furor and has resulted in promises of vengeance.
The family of Amal Kashua, a 38-year-old mother of eight who starred in the X-rated film, disowned her. Reuters reported that her family and her hometown announced a death sentence against her for shaming them.
Kashua and a man known as Amir, actors in the movie "Yussuf and Fatima," were set upon by a mob in Tira, a prosperous Arab community in Israel, on Dec. 22.
"A crowd began to gather around them as soon as they were recognized," said an Israeli police officer. "The crowd started beating them with sticks and also threw stones at them."
Israeli police saved Amir from being lynched shortly after the woman was badly beaten.
Tira residents were divided over whether Kashua and Amir were married or merely lovers. But they all agreed they should be punished.
"The whole town is satisfied and dissatisfied at once," resident Fathi Sultan told Reuters. "Satisfied at what happened because we tried to protect our honor, but on the other hand dissatisfied because she didn't die."
The woman said she agreed to act in the film because her eight children were hungry and she needed money to feed them. She was paid $150.
The litany of complaints began with the video's cover, which showed Kashua and Amir posed against a minaret.
"This is a blow to the sensitivity of Muslims everywhere," said Tira attorney Ihab Galgoly, who was representing two men arrested on suspicion of leading the assault on the couple.
